:In 1944, in a German camp in occupied Poland during World War II, Nazi scientist Dr. Klaus Schmidt observes young Erik Lehnsherr bend a metal gate with his mind after the child is separated from his mother. In his office, Schmidt orders Lehnsherr to move a coin on his

desk, and kills the boy's mother when Lehnsherr fails to do so. In anger, Lehnsherr's magnetic power manifests, killing two guards and destroying the room. Meanwhile, at a mansion in Westchester County, New York, child telepath Charles Xavier meets young shapeshifter Raven, whose natural form is blue-skinned and scaly. Overjoyed to meet someone else who is "different", he invites her to live with his family as his foster sister. In 1962, Lehnsherr is tracking down Schmidt, while Xavier graduates from the University of Oxford with a thesis about mutation. In Las Vegas, Central Intelligence Agency officer Moira MacTaggert follows U.S. Army Colonel Hendry into the Hellfire Club, where she sees Schmidt (now known as Sebastian Shaw), with mutant telepath Emma Frost, cyclone-producing Riptide and teleporter Azazel. Threatened by Shaw and teleported by Azazel to the Joint War Room, Hendry advocates deployment of nuclear missiles in Turkey. Shaw, an energy-absorbing mutant, later kills Hendry. MacTaggert, seeking Xavier's advice on mutation, takes him and Raven to the CIA, where they convince Director John McCone mutants exist and Shaw is a threat. Another CIA officer sponsors the mutants and invites them to the secret "Division X" facility. MacTaggert and Xavier find Shaw as Lehnsherr is attacking him, and rescue Lehnsherr from drowning as Shaw escapes. Xavier brings Lehnsherr to Division X, where they meet young scientist Hank McCoy, a mutant with prehensile feet, who believes Raven's DNA may provide a "cure" for their appearance. Xavier uses McCoy's mutant-locating device Cerebro to seek recruits against Shaw. Xavier and Lehnsherr recruit stripper Angel Salvadore, cabbie Armando Muñoz, Army prisoner Alex Summers, and Sean Cassidy, who code-name themselves Darwin, Havok, and Banshee, respectively. Raven dubs herself Mystique. Xavier and Lehnsherr also approach Wolverine, but he rudely declines. When Frost meets with a Soviet general in the USSR, Xavier and Lehnsherr capture Frost and discover Shaw intends to start World War III and trigger mutant ascendency. Azazel, Riptide and Shaw attack Division X, killing everyone but the mutants, whom Shaw invites to join him. Angel accepts; when Havok and Darwin retaliate, Shaw kills Darwin. Xavier takes the mutants to his family mansion for training. In Moscow, Shaw compels the general to have the USSR install missiles in Cuba. Wearing a helmet that foils Xavier's telepathy, Shaw follows the Soviet fleet in a submarine to ensure the missiles break a US blockade. Raven, thinking McCoy likes her in her natural form, tells him not to use the cure. When she later attempts to seduce Lehnsherr by taking the forms of various women, Lehnsherr instead tells her she is beautiful in her blue mutant form. McCoy uses the cure on himself but it backfires, giving him blue fur and leonine aspects. With McCoy piloting, the mutants and MacTaggert take a jet to the blockade line, where Lehnsherr uses his magnetic power to lift Shaw's submarine from the water and throw it on land. During the ensuing battle, Lehnsherr seizes Shaw's helmet, allowing Xavier to immobilize Shaw. Lehnsherr tells Shaw he shares Shaw's exclusivist view of mutants but, to avenge his mother, he kills Shaw ”over Xavier's objections ”by forcing the Nazi coin from his youth through Shaw's brain. Fearing the mutants, the U.S. and Soviet leaders order both fleets to fire missiles at them, which Lehnsherr turns back in mid-flight. MacTaggert tries to stop Lehnsherr by shooting him but he deflects the bullets, one of which hits Xavier in the spine. Lehnsherr rushes to help Xavier and, distracted, allows the missiles to fall harmlessly into the ocean. Parting with Xavier over their differing view on the relationship between humans and mutants, Lehnsherr leaves with Angel, Riptide, Azazel, and Mystique. Later, a wheelchair-bound Xavier and his mutants are at the mansion, where he intends to open a school. MacTaggert promises never to reveal his location and they kiss; at a CIA debriefing later, she says she has no clear memory of recent events. Elsewhere Lehnsherr, now calling himself "Magneto", frees Frost from confinement.

In the future, robots known as Sentinels are exterminating mutants and their human allies. A band of mutants evades the Sentinels with the help of Kitty Pryde, who has the ability to send a person's consciousness into the past. Pryde's group convenes with Storm, Wolverine, Professor Charles Xavier, and Erik Lehnsherr at a monastery in China. Kitty sends Logan's (Wolverine's) consciousness 50

years back in time to 1973 to prevent Mystique from assassinating Bolivar Trask, creator of the Sentinels. Following the assassination, Mystique was captured, and her DNA was used by Trask's company to improve the Sentinels, whose ability to adapt to any mutant power makes them almost invincible. Charles and Erik advise Logan to find both of their younger selves for help. At the X-Mansion in 1973, Logan encounters Charles and Hank McCoy. Xavier's Institute for Gifted Youngsters has closed after most of the teachers and students were drafted to the Vietnam War. Charles, a broken man, has been overusing a serum that allows him to walk but suppresses his telepathy. Logan explains his mission and persuades Charles to help free Erik from a prison cell beneath the Pentagon, where he is being held for allegedly assassinating President John F. Kennedy. They rescue Erik with the help of Peter Maximoff, a mutant with super speed. In Washington D.C., Trask unsuccessfully tries to sway Congress to gain support for his Sentinel program. Meanwhile, in Saigon, Mystique prevents William Stryker from appropriating a group of mutant G.I.s for Trask's research. Mystique investigates Trask's office and discovers he has been capturing mutants to use for his experiments. Charles, Erik, Hank, and Logan fly to Paris to intercept Mystique, who is impersonating a North Vietnamese general to infiltrate the Paris Peace Accords. There, Trask attempts to sell his Sentinel technology to Communist nations. Charles' group arrives as Mystique is about to kill Trask. Erik tries to kill Mystique to ensure her DNA cannot be used for the Sentinels, but she jumps from a window. The fight spills onto the street in view of the public, allowing Erik and Mystique to escape. Trask is saved, but the world is horrified by the existence of mutants. President Richard Nixon approves Trask's Sentinel program and arranges an unveiling ceremony. Trask's scientists recover Mystique's blood from the street. Meanwhile, Erik€”who has recovered his telepathy-blocking helmet€”intercepts the prototype Sentinels in transit and laces their polymer-based frames with steel, allowing him to control them. At the mansion, Charles stops taking his serum and slowly regains his mental powers, while losing the ability to walk. Through Logan, Charles speaks to his future self and is inspired to work for peace between humans and mutants once again. He uses Cerebro to track Mystique, who is heading to Washington D.C. As Charles, Logan, and Hank search for Mystique, Nixon unveils the Sentinel prototypes at the White House. Erik commandeers the Sentinels and attacks the crowd, then sets the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium around the White House as a barricade. Nixon and Trask, accompanied by the Cabinet, Secret Service officers, and Mystique (disguised as a Secret Service member), are taken to a safe room. Logan and Hank try to stop Erik, but he pits a Sentinel against them and then throws Logan into the Potomac River. In the future, the X-Men make their final stand as a large army of Sentinels attack the monastery. In 1973, Erik pulls the safe room from the White House and prepares to kill Nixon and his Cabinet. Mystique, who is disguised as Nixon, incapacitates Erik with a plastic gun. Charles persuades Mystique to spare Trask and allows her and Erik to flee. Mystique's actions are seen as a mutant saving the President, leading to the cancellation of the Sentinel program. Trask is arrested for trying to sell American military secrets. Logan wakes up in the future to find Bobby Drake, Rogue, Peter Rasputin, Kitty, Hank, Storm, Jean Grey, Scott Summers, and Charles alive. In 1973, Mystique impersonates Stryker and takes custody of Logan.

In Chicago, Wesley Allen Gibson works at a dead-end desk job with an overbearing boss, takes anti-anxiety medication for panic attacks, and has an unfaithful live-in girlfriend who cheats on him with his friend and colleague Barry. One night at the pharmacy, Wesley is told by a woman named Fox that his recently murdered father was an assassin, and the killer, Cross, is now hunting him. Cross arrives and engages in a shoot-out with Fox, who escapes in her car while bringing Wesley along. Wesley wakes up in the headquarters of the Fraternity, a secret society of assassins. The group's leader, Sloan, explains that Wesley's panic attacks are actually the untrained expression of a rare superhuman ability; when stressed, the drastically increased heart rate and adrenaline levels result in bursts of superhuman strength, speed, and reflexes and proves it as Wesley is able to shoot the wings off three flies. Sloan wants to teach him to control this ability and become an assassin and join their cause. Wesley is initially reluctant and returns to work, only to repent upon discovering several million dollars of inheritance in his bank account. Following a lecture from his boss Janice, Wesley finally snaps, insults her publicly in front of his colleagues and hits Barry with a keyboard. Fox arrives and takes him back to the Fraternity headquarters, a textile mill. Wesley is then subjected to brutal training, including endurance, knife wielding, reflexes and curving bullets from firearms. Afterward, Wesley is shown the Loom of Fate, a loom that gives the names of the targets through weaving errors in the fabric. Those the Loom identifies will apparently cause tragedy in the future, but only Sloan can see and interpret the names. Though Wesley is initially reluctant to kill, he is convinced once Fox reveals that in her childhood, a hired assassin whose name

appeared in the Loom burned her father alive. Fox later discovered that the Fraternity member sent to kill the hitman three weeks before her father was killed had failed to pull the trigger, leading her to consider preventing such tragedies her sole mission with her motto "kill one, save a thousand". After several missions, Wesley finally manages to leave his girlfriend, only to get into a shootout with Cross, where he accidentally kills another Fraternity member. Cross then curves a bullet into Wesley's shoulder. Sloan grants Wesley's wish to avenge his father and sends him after Cross ” but then secretly gives Fox a mission to kill Wesley, saying that his name had come up in the Loom as well. Analyzing the bullet that hit Wesley, it is discovered that it was manufactured by Pekwarsky, a bullet-maker living in eastern Moravia. Wesley and Fox capture Pekwarsky, who arranges a meeting with Cross. Wesley faces Cross alone on a moving train. Fox steals a car and crashes it into the train, causing a derailment. After Cross saves Wesley from falling into a ravine, Wesley fatally shoots him. Before dying, Cross reveals that he is Wesley's real father. Fox confirms this, and explains that Wesley was recruited because he was the only person that Cross would not kill. Fox points her gun at Wesley, but he shoots the glass under him, falling into the river. Wesley is retrieved by Pekwarsky, who takes him to his father's apartment and explains that Sloan started manufacturing targets for profit after discovering that he was targeted by the Loom of Fate, and did not tell the Fraternity members that they were now nothing more than paid killers. Cross discovered the truth and went rogue and started killing Fraternity members to keep them away from his son. Pekwarsky departs, stating that Wesley's father wished him a life free of violence. Wesley, however, decides to kill Sloan after discovering a secret room containing all of his father's weapons and maps. After putting explosives on rats to access the Fraternity's headquarters, Wesley kills nearly every Fraternity member. Upon entering Sloan's office, he reveals Sloan's deception to those present in the room. Sloan reveals that all of the assassins' names had come up in the weaving, and that he had acted to protect them. He gives the members two choices; kill themselves as per the code, or kill Wesley. The members are considering breaking the code and killing Wesley, but Fox, who believes more in the code turns on her fellow assassins and curves a bullet that kills everyone but Sloan and Wesley. She throws her gun to distract Wesley, before being killed by her own bullet. During all of this mayhem the Loom of Fate is destroyed, and Sloan manages to escape. Wesley is left penniless once again. A man is seen at Wesley's desk much later. Sloan appears and points a gun at the back of the man's head. The man turns around and is revealed to be a decoy. Sloan is killed by Wesley using a long-distance bullet. Wesley states his accomplishments and breaks the fourth wall, asking the audience, "What the fuck have you done lately?"
